Why do people use helium in balloons?

Helium is less dense than air so if you fill a balloon with it, it floats. This is helpful as it means they don't have to be hung from something. For example, many balloon arrangements you see at parties on tables or in the corner of the room are filled with helium. They sort of stand upright, in a way. However they do need a weight of some sort to stop them floating away! :)
