Why do people use shut up for human beings and shut down for computers?

Actually, if there was a switch to shut down other people, I have no doubt people would use it. Metaphorically speaking we do use shut down for other people and even for ourselves. When we defeat our opponents we speak of how we shut them down, sometimes we shut them down by telling them to shut up. Score! The truth is, it is unclear why we use the term "shut up" to get other people to stop talking. What does the direction of the shutting of the mouth have to do with shutting up? I suppose if everyone had shutters on windows in their attic then telling them to shut up would be a little more confusing. There are many ways in which to tell another person to shut there mouth and in the future one of those ways may very well become to shut down our your biological hard drive!! In the meantime there are other ways...here in wikianswers for example, supervisors can come along and delete this answer,, in effect, telling me to shut up. Or, they could deem this question a question that adds no value to wikianswers and lock it, in effect telling everybody to shut up. At any rate, I think I better shut up and clean my room, so I'll be shutting down now.
