After they get comfortable writing about existing characters and worlds, some people go on to create original fiction. Other people have no interest in writing other types of fiction. Fan fiction can be very good or it can be so badly written that it is unintentionally humorous. Some people want to become better writers and welcome criticism. And some people just don't care as long as they're having fun. Fan fiction is whatever you want it to be, but most of all fan fiction is fun.
