Why do people write fanfiction?

It's a way to have fun with writing without having to create your own world or characters. Fan fiction can be a way of leaning how to write. They can post their stories online and get feedback. Although most fan fiction feedback is uncritical and isn't very helpful, just the experience of having people read your words and react can be a real confidence booster. After they get comfortable writing about existing characters and worlds, some people go on to create original fiction. Other people have no interest in writing other types of fiction. Fan fiction can be very good or it can be so badly written that it is unintentionally humorous. Some people want to become better writers and welcome criticism. And some people just don't care as long as they're having fun. Fan fiction is whatever you want it to be, but most of all fan fiction is fun.
