Plants grow better in warmer temperatures because when the temperature is warm the stoma of the plant open up. More carbon dioxide enters and more water vapor exits. The more carbon dioxide the more the plant photosynthesizes.

The plants which grow well outside need access to sun, the nutrients in soil and rain.

There are plants which grow well indoors as they are adapted to that environment or are looked after by horticulturists or home makers.

Plants indoors often have their environment created specifically for them, so if you have the skills and resources their environment can be made perfect and they will perform optimally. Also, pests are less common indoors but occasionally they do still get in.

If the environment where you live is suitable they will perform well too. As plants usually have more space outdoors they often grow a lot bigger and this makes up for anything pests may have eaten. Outdoors you will not have any lighting costs either.

Really it depends on your resources but if you have skills, money and space then indoors is probably best and no one will steal your plants. Plants will perform better outdoors than on a window ledge or under fluorescent lighting.
