All animals sometimes smell their own (and other animals') droppings. It's about pheromones; scents that animals use to communicate who they are.

Rabbits also eat cecotropes. These are a different kind of dropping (different from feces). The rabbit eats it straight from the anus, usually, so you don't often see them around. Rabbits eat cecotropes for the same reason cows chew the cud: it's a form of predigestion to get the most nutrients out of the food as possible.

Rabbits consume a lot of grass and other leafy material rich in cellulose, which is not easy to digest. Larger ruminants such as cows have multiple stomachs which allow vegetable matter to go through several phases of digestion, but the smaller body of a rabbit would not have room for multiple stomachs, so their solution is to partially digest the food and then release it in the form of droppings, and then eat it again and complete the process of digestion.
