"Visible light" is that part of the electromagnetic spectrum (which includes radio waves, heat, X-rays and Gamma rays) which our eyes can detect.

Thus when scientists are talking about "light" they are talking about ALL of the spectrum and when they say "visible light" they are talking about that small bit of the spectrum that we can see.
