The Seventh-day Adventist church does not have a stance on birthday parties. I have been an Adventist my whole life and have gone to and had many parties. The only time I have not gone to a party would be if the party was on Sabbath (Saturday) and the activities planned would not be things I would feel comfortable doing on the Sabbath.

The first thing is that the two biblical accounts that mention birthdays are not favorable. The first mention in the 40th and 41st chapter of Genesis gives the account of it being Pharaoh's birthday. On his birthday, for no apparent reason, Pharaoh exalted the cup bearer that was jailed, and hung up on a stake the baker who was also jailed. By the way, the honoring of one and the execution of the other was predicted by Joseph through the relating of the two men's dreams to him.

The other account was during King Herod's birthday in both Matthew and Mark. King Herod, for his birthday asked his daughter, who pleased him, to ask him for whatever she wanted, for it would be given to her. She asked her mother, and her mother told her to ask for the head of John the Baptist; and therefore because of this he was killed.

These are the two biblical accounts often mentioned that put birthdays in a negative light. But the clearest reason for this doctrine is not in a story, but in a verse of wisdom, in Ecclesiastes 7:1. In this verse it says, "A name is better than good oil, and the day of death than the day of one's being born." So, in other words, making a good name for yourself (preferably in a spiritual manner) is the best thing of all, and the day you die is more important than the day you were born because when you are born you haven't learned anything or proven to God your worth, but when you die you certainly have.
