Mountain goats can grip the steep, rocky mountain tops because they have special hooves. The hooves have a soft, hollowed pad in the middle that acts a bit like a sucker to grip the bare rocks. Using their hooves, mountain goats can run, jump and climb across the rocks. They go to parts of the mountains where it would be too dangerous for predators, such as snow leopards, to follow.
i was told farmers keep sheep on hills because if they fall over if on flat ground they are top heavy and cannot get back up so if you keep them on hills it helps them roll back over,
Also the flat land is more likely to be more arable and more suited to cropping
There are several possible reasons for farmers to "farm on mountains", and it partly depends on how one defines "mountain".
In an alpine setting, the mountainsides may be the only friable earth available and the farmer simply follows local tradition.
In other locales, hillsides may be preferred for water and/or cold air drainage. (Think wine grapes.)
For some crops, the combination of altitude, soil, latitude and the local climate are best
in mountainous areas. (Think coffee.)

Farmers have farms to cultivate crops, raise livestock, and produce food for consumption or sale.
