Skunks themselves, do not have a bad scent. But the scent they release from their glands is totally disgusting. They spray as a method of defense, but only after severe provoking, they will fist hiss and stop their paws, and warn you to back off.

Yes that's why when you have a skunk living near you , you should get it away as soon as possible :)
they have scent glands where they make it. It takes about 7 days to get new scent, preditors don't know this however so they stay away just to be safe.
