Snails are important because without them the enemies of a snail wouldn't have anything to eat, then the predators who eat snails wouldn't have enough food to eat then there will be less and less of them, and then the predators who eat the enemies of a Snail would not have enough food and so on so its a chain reaction, you change one thing the whole thing is effected.

Three things to do in order to get rid of pest snails in pond. 1. Decrease feeding. Snails feed on leftover fish food. Get rid of their food source will limit their population growth. 2. Manually removal. Use vegetables to set up trap for them. You can remove a dozen or two at a time. Might not seem to be a lot at first when you have hundreds or thousands of pest snails, but eventually you will see noticeable drop in their population. 3. Get assassin snails, or puffer and loach fish to feast on them. These natural enemies of the pest snails will eat them for food.
