Early Christianity was split into two opposing views on sex. Influenced by Jewish law and custom, Orthodox Christians believed that sex outside marriage was prohibited, some even believing that marriage was to be avoided if possible. For them, sex was purely a necessary function in order to conceive and produce children and should otherwise be avoided. Gnostic Christians, on the other hand, believed that sex was only acceptable if conception could be avoided, because it is wrong to bring innocent children into this evil world.

Ultimately, orthodox Christianity came to dominate, bring with it its negative views on sex. Gnostic converts, particularly St Augustine, then brought some of the very different negative perceptions from Gnosticism. Hence Christianity developed a confused and intolerant view of sexuality, that only really began to be loosened in the twentieth century.
