Chemicals that have been known for many years had names that predated the IUPAC standard names we use today.

One of my favorites is copper sulfate. It used to be known as bluestone or blue vitriol. It was called this because you make it by heating oil of vitriol (today known as sulfuric acid) and adding copper to it, and blue crystals would precipitate.
