In Great Britain, a person may become knight of the British empire, this is for contributing greatly to the country or charity etc. people with this are called sir before their names as a sign of higher status than people with regular names. There are other forms of reward from the Queen such as a OBE (Order of the Britsh empire) but if you receive these you are not called sir.
