Because the old adage "there's someone for everyone" is a myth. There isn't someone for everyone. Sure, there's enough people in the world that everyone could almost certainly - numerically speaking - find a partner. However, this doesn't address the issue of compatibility in the least. Some people just have very idiosyncratic personalities or unusual tastes, which drastically limits the number of compatible partners that are likely to exist for them in the world. People who lie at the extreme end of this scale could easily go their entire lives without meeting someone who'd make a reasonable love interest for them. These individuals will likely spend their lives alone. Although this may sound lonely, it is still preferable to the alternative some desperately lonely people grasp on to - namely forming relationships with people with whom they are NOT compatible. These poor souls invariably learn that nothing is more lonely - or miserable - than a relationship between two people who just don't belong together.
