There are methods of "fixing" the hard disks, to make them operable again, which they can then re-sell them as "refurbished" or use them for personal use. Personally, I'd be wary of "giving away" or "selling" a hard drive, or even dumping it at a street. Your whole life could be on that little disk, and most users don't know how to properly erase/format/wipe a hard drive before sale. Even a "dead" hard drive can be revived, and data retrieved - when done by the right person with the right skills.

Whilst your planning on buying a hard drive, personally I would consider purchasing some more ram too, as 128Mb, will not get you very far, also its the best upgrade you could ever do.
