I can't imagine why anyone would say this.
There were only twelve 'apostles', all men (Matthew 10:2-4).
Mary Magdalene was not an 'apostle', but she was most definitely a 'disciple' (a 'taught one'). Jesus expelled 7 demons from Mary (Luke 8:2) and because of this she, along with other faithful women, put faith in Jesus and worked hard in caring for the needs of the apostles and Jesus himself (Luke 8:1-3). She was a faithful Christian right up until Jesus' death (Matthew 27:55,56,61/Mark 15:40/John 19:25). She was also one of the women who prepared spices for Jesus' body(Matthew 28:1/Mark 15:47/Mark 16:1+2/Luke 23:55+56/Luke 24:1) and was the first to go to Jesus' grave after Sabbath, found it empty and informed the apostles of the situation. When she returned to the grave, she spoke to the 'gardener'(John 20:11-18) who turned out to be the risen Jesus, and ran to tell the disciples(John 20:1-4)that Jesus had been resurrected. Mary Magdalene(which may imply that she was connected to the town of Magdala somehow) was a faithful follower of Jesus, and so a legitimate disciple.

How was Saint Mary Magdalene's life before becoming a saint?

Scripture tells us that Mary Magdalene was a sinner before she met Jesus and repented of her sins. Jesus drove seven demons from her. Mary became a loyal disciple of Jesus and frequently traveled with him and the apostles. She and her sister Martha occasionally entertained Jesus and the apostles at their home in Bethany and provided them with food and hospitality. Mary Magdalene was present at the crucifixion of Our Lord and also encountered Jesus in the garden after the resurrection and was the first of the disciples to see him.As per the Catholic Encyclopedia, Mary Magdalene, Mary of Bethany and Mary the Sinner are one and the same. This view is not held by some Protestant denominations, however. Some say she was a prostitute but there in no scriptural evidence to support this and that view is not held by the Catholic Church.
