Submarines use both Sonar and Radar for navigation. Though a submarine can use Radar while submerged (at periscope depth, with the Radar mast above the water) it normally isn't used since Radar emissions can be picked up and give a boat's presence and position away.
Radar is primarily used for navigation while entering or exiting a port. Submarines are extremely low in the water, and are therefore more difficult for normal merchant ships to see. In this regard, it's essential for a submarine to detect and avoid all surface vessels as early as possible while transiting on the surface.
submarines and bats both use sonar. Calvin was here
Sonars were used to detect any objects that got into the detection field of the sonar. By this, the military could detect enemy submarines etc., which they couldn't see normally because of the opacity and/or darkness of the water.
oceanographers use equipment such as sonar, satellites, and radar to map the ocean floor. marine biologists use scuba equipment, submarines, R.O.V.'s, and various other dissection tools to study and understand organisms that live in the ocean.
For tactical use, no. The frequencies are too high to be used for anything tactical. They are often used as part of machines for cleaning mechanical parts aboard ship though. Submarines use sonar (sound navigation and ranging), in much the same way that airplanes use radar (radio detection and ranging).
Yes sonar can be used at periscope depth. Surface ships also have sonar arrays on them. They are usually used to detect submarines.
They use Radar , Sonar, and at periscope depth- optical range finders, the tech manual for the latter is over 300 pages, so its a skilled craft to operate these specialized sights.
Battle at Midway
They use Sonar to send sound waves to the bottom of the oceans.
they use sonar like bats do to detect objects that are in their path
Sonar
They are mapped by sonar. The same technology they use to detect submarines from battleships / carriers.
sonar - by bouncing sound signals off the bottom of the ocean, they were able to map the depth of the ocean. Deep sea diving would take too long. Satellites were not in orbit until the 1970's and submarines were not necessary since sonar could be done from the surface on a boat.
