The Judicial Branch is supposed to be independent and free from influence by a political party or any member of the government. If a justice on the Supreme Court, or any appointed judge, was threatened with loss of job or needed to gain support to remain on the bench, such as having to run for reelection, then that judge would not be able to be completely independent. Serving for life, a justice knows he/she can base a decision on the facts, not politics.

The rationale for life-long appointments is the perceived notion that the justices will be more impartial and fair in their rulings if they are not subject to re-election or re-confirmation. The nomination process is heavily based on politics, so without life-long appointments there would be a risk that justices decided cases in a way that maximizes their chances for re-election rather than purely on the law.

Another reason it is not a limited tenure is that becoming a Supreme Court justice is the highest position within the legal system, it is the ultimate vote of confidence so we trust their judgment and that they know when it is time to retire. This also plays into the political system that we allow justices to retire when they choose, often when a President from their party is in office so that a justice of similar philosophy will be appointed.

A further reason is that most justices are close to retirement age when they are appointed [relatively speaking; most are in their 50s when appointed], so most of them will only be able to serve for a limited term either way.

US Presidents can only serve two consecutive terms or eight years. The founding fathers struggled with that question long and hard. It has also had considerable discussion since, and when Franklin Roosevelt ran for a fourth term, the Nation decided that enough was enough and changed the limits enumerated in the Constitution. Changes to that document are not taken lightly by the Citizens.

What do you think of Supreme Court Justices having political party affiliations?

Supreme Court Justices do not necessarily have parties because they do not run for a political seat. The criteria for a supreme court justice has to be someone who is familiar with the law such as a former lawyer. If Supreme Court justices ran on a political platform that could complicate the position they hold because many political parties have money or a platform they run on.
