Two main reasons

  1. the surface of the earth is not smooth so currents have to travel in curved paths to get around obstacles
  2. Coriolis forces - because of the huge distances involved the differences of forces due to the changes in the circumference of the earth at different latitudes causes currents to curve even if they are trying to travel in a straight line. Note: it takes huge distances - on the order of miles - to see any effect from Coriolis forces (- despite the urban folklore out there about drains swirling different directions in the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Hint - they don't) Unless your sink or toilet is miles across, you won't be seeing Coriolis forces determining the direction of swirl as they drain.

What is the surface currents north of the equator are?

Because of the spinning of the Earth, wind and ocean currents closest to the equator will travel straighter. Wind and ocean currents further from the equator will deflect away from the equator.Ê

Why is the surface on the top of an airplane wing curved?

The top surface of an airplane wing is curved to create lift. Because of the curve, air has to travel farther across the top of the wing than across the bottom; this creates a low-pressure condition that pulls the airplane into it.

The earth is round prove it?

Yes, travel. Because the Earth's surface is curved, you'll notice that different constellations of stars are revealed ...

Why are continents not fixed permanently in location on the earths crust?

The continents are embedded in the top side of crustal plates which float on the surface of the mantle. Convection currents in the mantle carry the plates around and the embedded continents travel along.

What areconvection currents?

Convection currents is the circular movement in which particles travel in.

Why don't the earth's surface currents travel freely across the globe in a uniform pattern?

The landmasses cause the water to turn. This is called Continental Deflection.

Can you travel around the world in a straight line in a sub?

No, as the world is round, the path the sub took would have to be equally curved.
