Political cartoonists have, for many decades, used the donkey to represent the Democratic party and the elephant to represent the Republican party. The reason for these choices is not obvious, however, in some sense the Democratic party is seen as being more prone to populism or even demagoguery, hinted at by the foolish braying of the donkey, and the Republican party has the intimidating quality of a gigantic elephant, a creature which because of its size, seemingly can go where it wants to, ignoring all obstacles. Both of these animal symbols are satirical in nature. Political cartoonists have reason to satirize both parties.
The symbols for the two American political party are, the elephant and the donkey, the elephants represent the Republicans and the donkey represents the Democrats.
During the mid term elections way back in 1874, Democrats tried to scare voters into thinking President Grant would seek to run for an unprecedented third term. Thomas Nast, a cartoonist for Harper's Weekly, depicted a Democratic jackass trying to scare a Republican elephant - and both symbols stuck.
