Seventh Day Adventists do not believe that Ellen White is a prophet. White herself didn't even refer to herself a prophet, and said that if people were to study their bibles, they would not even have to read her writings. Rather, Adventists think of her as women inspired by God.

Some Adventists do not even read her writings, and prefer to only study and trust in The Bible. So Ellen White is not a prophet. She was, rather, "a servant of God." Christ inspired through her, to give light and clarity about important issues such as "The great controversy," and "The health message," something that is very popular amidst the Adventists people.

They don't. Belief in Ellen White is not even a requirement for membership.

Was Ellen White a prophet?

This question is a source of controversy. Many Seventh-day Adventists believe that she was. Others, including some Adventists, do not. She herself did not want faith in her to be a requirement for membership in the Adventist church (which it is not). There is evidence from her life, her writings, and her visions which is conclusive for many.

Do you have to believe in Ellen White in order to be an Adventist?

Excellent question!Ellen White herself was against belief in her gift being a requirement for membership, so no, you do not have to believe in Ellen White to be a Seventh-day Adventist. On the other hand, most Adventists do believe in Ellen White. And whether you believe she was a prophet or not, her writings are good, uplifting reading, particularly her best known works: The Desire of Ages, Steps to Christ, and The Great Controversy.

What percentage of Seventh-day Adventists believe in Ellen White?

The number of Adventists who believe in Ellen White must be fairly large, especially since the church as an institution holds her in high regard. It would not be surprising if the number were lower in the US than in other countries, for example, but it is safe to say that most Adventists outside the US believe in her. I would guess that the worldwide percentage is somewhere around 85% or more. Many Adventists would be surprised by the question, assuming that all Adventists believe in her. Many have been brought to the church through her writings. Critics and skeptics of her within the church have always been in the minority. Another answer: The percentage of Seventh-Day Adventists who believe in Ellen White is less than 20%.

Do Seventh-day Adventists believe in Mary?

Answer 1Seventh-day Adventist believe in the incarnate birth of Jesus Christ. We believe that Mary was the vessel used by God to bring Jesus into this world by human/natural birth. We believe in the Bible account of Jesus' birth as outlined in Matthew 1.The premise of the question however is, do we (Adventists) "believe" in Mary as the Roman Catholic Church believes; in that she is Holy, Adored, and Worshiped as a "God-like" person. The answer is No.Adventist do not believe in or pray to Mary. We do not believe that she is alive. We do not believe that she is to be worship in any way. We honor her only as a member of the characters within the Bible who played pivotal roles in God's plan for humanity. She is respected just as Martha, Mary of Magdalene, Joseph, and many others whom God used for His purpose. She in no way stands above any other person, and she was a sinner in need of salvation like all humanity.Answer 2Seventh-day Adventists do not believe in praying to Mary, but they wholeheartedly adore and obey Ellen White, their revered prophetess, church mother, and infallible interpreter of Scripture. One must first confess Ellen G. White before an Adventist minister is allowed to baptize anyone into Christ. Due to their fervently believing in the extra-biblical authority and reveries of Ellen White, Seventh-day Adventists cannot be considered to be Protestants.

Did the Prophet Ellen G White believe in hell?

Yes, just not in the same way as traditional Christianity. Rather than believing hell to be some place underground where souls of the dead lost are continuously burning, Ellen White and Seventh Day Adventists believe that hell/the lake of fire is going to be an event in the end times. Since they believe in soul sleep, they don't believe that anyone is in either heaven or hell, they are just asleep, awaiting resurrection. But in the end God will rain down fire to destroy the current Earth and all unrepentant sinners. The wicked will be killed in the fire (and it's called the "second death" where there will be no hope of resurrection), not kept alive and burned for all eternity.

What is the difference between Mormons and Seventh-day Adventists?

As you likely have noted, members of these two faiths hold strong to many of the same values. They both believe in prophecy, healthy living and the respect of the body as a temple, baptism by immersion, tithing, following the Commandments, community service, and many others. However these churches are different in several important ways. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons or Latter-day Saints for short) believe in the Book of Mormon as another testament of Jesus Christ. They also have great love for and belief in the Holy Bible and believe both books to be the word of God. Both faiths believe the Holy Bible to be a closed book (one that should not be added to or taken from). Adventists believe in the Holy Bible as their sole book of scripture but also believe the writings of Ellen White as prophecy. Latter-day Saints recognize that there are literally hundreds of translations of the Bible (some of which contradict each other) and therefore believe in the Holy Bible to be perfect in as much as it was translated correctly. Nonetheless Latter-day Saints and Adventists both try to follow closely the example of Christianity set forth in this wonderful Holy book. Mormons believe Joseph Smith was a prophet and Adventists believe Ellen G. White was a prophet. Mormons additionally believe in modern-day revelation through prophets who have been chosen by God since Joseph Smith was killed. The prophet leads the Church at the direction of Jesus Christ and stands as as special witness and representative of Christ to all on the Earth. Christ said that He came not to abolish the Law (commandments) or the prophets but to fulfill them. Both faiths recognize the Sabbath as a day that should be focused on the Savior as emphasized in the ten commandments and made clear in the Sermon on the Mount by Christ Himself. Each believe that it should be a day of rest from your usual labors and a day with an extra (since every day should so be) emphasis on worship. Latter-day Saints recognize Sunday as the Sabbath secondary to a latter-day revelation that stated the sabbath should be transferred to the "Day of the Lord" in observance of the atonement of the Savior. Adventists recognize Saturday (sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday) as the Sabbath. Members of both faiths recognize a strict health code. Many Adventists are vegetarians and all abstain from cigarettes and alcohol. Latter-day Saints believe in abstaining from alcohol, tobacco, coffee and tea, other harmful or addictive substances, in addition to promote eating healthy grains, vegetables, fruits, and limited amounts of meat. Certainly each of these faiths is distinct, but they do share many similarities -- including their strong commitment to the Savior. If you are wondering which to join, many can share their opinions and beliefs. However, the decision is between you and God. I'd encourage you to spend time talking with him to see what He would have you do. Read about each church from reliable sources: www.adventist.org and www.mormon.org or www.lds.org. All have a lot of useful information. Don't seek out information about Adventists from Mormons or about Latter-day Saints from Adventists (you wouldn't likely ask an English professor about a mathematical problem, or a physician about how to build a gas pipeline). Its tough to not be biased based on firm belief but God will not steer you wrong.
