Why do the later months of summer have hotter weather than the first day of summer?

Because the earth is not perfectly "lined up" with the sun, it is tilted to one side, a tilt which remains more or less the same as the earth travels around the sun, so for a certain number of months the northern hemisphere is more directly exposed to the sun, days are longer and warmer, then the other half gets the same. Closer to the poles it's wierder, there are long stretches of night and day for weeks at a time.
