I have heard that it got its name from its shape.

Hard candy used to be a solid circular shape but, if accidentally swallowed, a person could choke and stop breathing because the candy would lodge in the throat and block the airway.

So Lifesaver decided to put a small hole in the center (like a life preserver) to allow the passage of air, if ever swallowed.

life savers were named because a guy choked on a mint that didn't have a hole in the middle so they put a hole in the middle and called the life savers because people can get air through the hole therefore saving their lives if the choke.

Life-Savers are ring shaped, similar to life preservers.

Because of the shape, like a Life Saver flotation device seen on boats.
