the gear creates a lot of drag so raising it reduces that drag
low gear ratios
Most motorcycles, personal watercraft and airplanes are usually lacking a reverse gear.
Hydraulics help an airplanes landing gear by retracting it (raising it into the plane). Simple gravity is what pulls it down into place.
Uhh...keeping airplanes from lying on the ground when they're not flying?
Most piston driven planes are a direct drive, some have a gear reduction between the engine and propeller. But no transmissions that I know of.

There was a major takeover plan for the company
The number of wheels an airplane has depends on the type of airplane. Some have none and take off and land on water, or on snow or ice. Many smaller airplanes have 3, like the piston powered Cessna 172 Skyhawk. We often call these planes private aircraft. The tricycle landing gear with a single wheel on each leg is common in airplanes a bit larger, too. The larger airplanes have more, as you'd guess. The Boeing 747 has 18 wheels and there are 22 on the Airbus A380.The number of wheels an airplane has depends on the type of airplane.
