Both the Arctic and Antarctic have large amounts of ice. The arctic (North Pole) is all ice. The reason for this is the way the Earth orbits the sun. The directs rays of the Sun hit the Earth at the equator. The further away from the equator the colder it becomes. The Earth tilts on it axis and causes about six months of darkest at both the North and South Poles,(not at the same time). When the North Pole is angled toward the Sun than the Northern Hemishpere will have Summer (North America). When the South Pole tilts toward the sun it becomes Summer in the Southern Hemishpere (Australia). So these two poles, receive no sun light for months at a time and do not warm as quick due to the reflection of the sunlight by the ice and snow. However due to global warming part of the Ross ice shelf in the Antarctica has broken off from the mainland and is floating free. It is said to be the size of the State of Conn.
