Because as you get higher up the temperature begins to get colder and the soil tends to get rockier, both of which are not suitable conditions for trees to grow.

The higher up you get on a mountain, the less soil and the more rocks there are. Therefore, the trees can't get as many nutrients and are unable to grow as tall.
