To prevent blood from going the wrong way. It has to move TOWARDS the heart and thence to the lungs to get rid of CO2, and pick up oxygen. Otherwise, you die.

What do veins have to prevent blood from flowing backward?

One-way valves prevent the back flow of bloodThere are tiny one way valves throughout a vein. These stop blood from flowing backwards. Interestingly, when these valves in veins in the legs malfunction, the result are varicose veins.

What Valves inside the veins prevent blood from flowing from the heart?

The blood in veins is not under direct pressure from the heart. It has little valves inside to prevent blood from flowing backwards away from the heart. These valves inside the veins prevent the backflow of blood in veins. They encourage the one-directional flow of blood to the heart.

Do valves inside the veins prevent blood from flowing into the heart?

The blood in veins is not under direct pressure from the heart. It has little valves inside to prevent blood from flowing backwards away from the heart. These valves inside the veins prevent the backflow of blood in veins. They encourage the one-directional flow of blood to the heart.

One-way valves are found in which blood vessels?

Veins. Veins are blood vessels that carry blood from tissues and organs back to the heart; they have thin walls and one-way valves.

Why do veins only have one way valves?

Veins have one way valves because the pressure in veins is lower than that in arteries, and the valves prevent backflow that could be caused by gravity or muscle flexure.

What are flaps of tissue that allow blood to flow in only one direction?

They are called valves, or leaflet valves in the veins, that interlock to prevent backflow of the blood.

What is the major difference between arteries and veins?

Arteries carry blood away from the heart. Veins return blood to the heart.

What carries blood toward the heart from the lungs?

Arteries carry blood away from the heart and Veins carry blood back to the heart. When the heart contracts it pushes the blood out through one way valves. There are also little one way valves in the veins and arteries so that the blood will continue to flow in one direction.

Do the valves of veins keep blood flowing in one direction?

yes.it prevent the intermixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood

How are heart valves similar to valves in veins?

in both the valves blood flow in one direction.

The flaps in veins that ensure one way flow of blood are called?

VALVES

What are the 2 main differences between Arteries and Veins?

Viens carry blood away from the heart while veins carry blood towardj the heart. Arteries are generally thicker than veins because arteries must withstand the pressure of the blood coming away from the heart.
