Earth as a Blue Marble relates to a picture taken on December 7, 1972, by the crew of the Apollo 17 spacecraft at a distance of about 45,000 kilometres (28,000 mi). The crew had their back to the sun so the Earth was fully illuminated. Similar pictures have been taken since that time.
The phrase is used and popularized in Carl Sagan's documentary/science series "Cosmos" to represent the beauty and smallness of our planet in relation to the Universe.
