The oral histories of the ancient world did not survive. The Royal Library of Alexandria, which had the largest collection of books and writings of the ancient world had been destroyed by 28 BC. Two other libraries, probably public libraries survived--Serapeum and Cesarion temples until later.

Single and double flutes were played throughout the medieval period. Manuscript illustrations of the court of king David often show him as a medieval king playing his harp (with which he was supposed to have composed all 150 psalms in the Bible), surrounded by musicians playing bells, viols, rebecs, organistra, flutes and the plucked psaltery. Later in the period, the lute and shawm became popular, followed by the crumhorn and the recorder. By what other name is the medieval period also known?

The simple answer is that the medieval period is also called the Middle Ages. There is some complexity, however. The period from the 5th through 10th centuries was called the Dark Ages, but the term Early Middle Ages is more common now. What used to be called the Middle Ages, a time from the 11th to 15th centuries, is now often counted as the High Middle Ages (1000 to 1300) and Late Middle Ages (1300 to some time in the 15th century).
