The Domain Name System (DNS) is responsible for translating URLs like www.answers.com in the ip address, the real address, of a website (for example 69.63.184.142).
So without a DNS you'd have to remember all the IP addresses of the websites which is way harder than remembering alphanumeric names.

∙ 9y agoBasically because it's easier for humans to remember the words /names in a Domain Name or Website, rather than typing the string of numbers of its IP Address into the browser address bar.
Example:
It's usually easier to type "microsoft.com" instead of "65.55.57.27", even though they both take you to the exact same "place" online.
DNS (Domain Name Servers) automatically translate the domain name to its actual numerical server "location".
