Weeds suck-up a lot of water. So your plants won't get as much water as they need.

In the end they'll die

The main reason is that weeds rob the other plants of nutrients that they need to thrive. Example, (oxygen, phosphorus, potassium) and water. The root systems of some weeds are very invasive and take over an area quickly. They can be difficult and expensive to get rid of them. Secondly, from an aesthetic viewpoint the weeds begin to crowd out the nice plants that cost you money to place in the garden and it looks unkempt. A good way to prevent weeds is to mulch the planting areas with a covering of bark mulch (shredded redwood or cedar, small bark, or chips) about 2" thick. Replace as needed.

Weeds are plants which grow unwanted in one's field or garden. A farmer wants the water and soil nutrients of his field to be wholly dedicated to the growing of his chosen crop. Weeds use water and nutrients which would otherwise be going towards making the crop bigger and more productive.

Avoidance of pathogens and pests, control over landscape looks and decrease in competition over resources are reasons why gardeners want to get rid of weeds. Weeds can be hosts for viruses, such as beet curly top, that harm edibles and ornamentals. They tend to have multiple means of reproduction, such as by rootable rhizomes and root and stem fragments and by seeding, and to outcompete non-weedy plants for light, moisture and nutrients.

They steal nutrients from the ground that would otherwise be available for the vegetables, fruit, or flowers that you are trying to grow.
