Whales started out as land living mammals - some still have remains of hind legs in their bodies - which eventually somehow turned into sea-living mammals.

And while many parts of their bodies changed to fit a swimming lifestyle, they still breathe air, with lungs.

If whales and dolphins did not come up to the surface to breathe, they would drown and there would not be any dolphins or whales!!

They don't. Whales breathe with lungs, just like you and I. When they dive, they hold their breath. But they're far better at that than the average human

Whales have blowholes on their head and everytime they come up to the surface of the water the blowholes push out air that was in there already and inhale new air everytime they come up.

Because they are mammals like cows and foxes and horses and mice and elephants (and us). They are no fish and therefore have no gills to extract oxygen from the water.
