The meaning of the word "diet" in daily use has drifted a bit from the original meaning.
Diet started out being simply a description or a list of what you ate.
So whatever you ate, that was your diet, or your eating list.
But today, most people think of a diet as being a list of "special" things to eat, for a certain purpose.
If you want to lose weight, you go on a low-calorie diet - meaning a list of what and how much you should be eating if you want to lose weight.
If you're an athlete, you might be on a high carbohydrate diet to have energy enough to train hard.
And so on.
So when you hear about wild animals and diets, it's in the old meaning of the word - an eating list - and not in the current meaning of a planned eating list for a specific purpose.

Great White Sharks (Carcharodon carcharias), being the largest predatory fish, do eat other sharks, including those of their same species. Sharks eat or attack people because they see them as their regular diet. They don't mean to eat us they just mistake. Some sharks actually let go because they realize that you are not good tasting or a part of its diet. We are not yummy to sharks. Compare you on a surf board on your tummy, a turtle, and a sea lion. Don't they look alike? That is why sharks eat people.

The true meaning of the word "diet" is simply that it describes what someone eat. Today " diet" most often describes a list of certain things to eat for a specific purpose - usually to lose weight. This is a very human invention that animals don't care about. Animals have a diet - a list of things they usually eat. But they don't "go on a diet".
