Because traditionally the men were the bread winners, and it was thought that the person supporting the family should get paid more while another who was not necessarily known to be supporting the family should get less. This is untrue logic for not all men and women support or don't support a family, but it's what happend :(

Sex matters greatly in choosing an occupations. Women prefer occupations they can leave and return to over their careers, like teacher, nurse, or cook, rather than occupations one must exercise every year or fall behind, like engineer, scientist, or cop. Women DO leave the workforce and properly fall behind those with more experience and seniority in the same occupatioin.
The short answer is yes. Recent numbers look to be around 80 cents for every dollar a man makes.
No objective study in the last 20 years has found that women get paid less than men FOR THE SAME JOBS under the same circumstances, with the same qualifications and experience.
People get confused because the AVERAGE female worker earns less than the AVERAGE male worker, since the two sexes do not work the same occupations.
