A suffix (and a prefix too) can make a root word become an entirely new word or modify the root word to add more emphasis. Take the root word "happy".

Change the meaning: unhappy, now the word means a person is not happy (this is a prefix however)

Emphasize the meaning: happier suffix meaning "way more than"

happiest suffix meaning "the most happiest"

happiness suffix meaning the "state of being happy

Now watch what you can do with both a prefix and a suffix:

Jennifer is the unhappiest person I have ever met. She is the bitterest person and I don't like to be around her. Now, Nancy is the least bitter person and the happiest person like Cinderella getting marred to the Prince.

A suffix is added to the end of a word to modify its meaning or create a new word. It can change the tense, form, or part of speech of the word.
