Period pain occurring after your period can be due to a hormone imbalance in your body which will often sort itself out, but it is probably best to see your doctor to rule out any underlying problem.

Menstrual cramps are a result of prostagladins which are hormone-like substances which cause the uterus to contract in order to push out the menstrual flow. If you produce too much of these prostagladins it causes inflammation and constriction in the blood vessels that supply blood to the uterus - this is similar to the constriction of blood vessels to the heart during a heart attack, which gives you an idea why menstrual cramps can be so painful.

Menstrual cramps are common during menstruation but not a normal part of healthy menstruation, most women can prevent cramps with things as simple as dietary changes. If you suffer severe menstrual cramps you should talk to your doctor about investigating the cause and look at treatment options.

Cramps are caused by prostaglandins which are chemicals the body produces in order to induce uterus contractions. These contractions help move the blood out of the vagina.
