Usually because one is touched by the Spirit. It is the Spirit testifying to you that what you have heard is true. It gives you understanding of something that you have not comprehended before. It is the spirit of enlightenment.

To make yourself crying while you pray is not an easy thing to do, but most people find it helpful to smile. Smiling helps prevent you from crying. But it is not a bad thing for you to cry while praying. The more emotion you put into it, the more you will feel it.

There are several potential reasons to cry at church:

  • emotional involvement with a funeral or wedding or similar ceremony
  • Allergies from incense being burned
  • allergies from peanuts, cat dander or other materials from someone sitting near you
  • physical pain (sickness, toothache, etc)
  • boredom and wanting to be somewhere else
  • a pinch or slap from a parent or sibling

We cry when we are sad because we used it as an infant to get attention, if we were sad, angry, hungry, tired etc. and it has stuck. We still cry when we are emotional.

Because sometimes people are sad about things when they pray, and you cry when you are sad. Unless they are tears of joy.
