As well a using visual clues to tell if you are upright or falling there is a small area of your inner ear that contains three semi-circular liquid-filled tubes arranged at 90o to each other. They are collectively called the semi-circular canals.
The tubes are lined on the inside with sensitive whiskers and when you stand still, move about or turn and tilt your head the liquid in these tubes moves about, finding their levels in each direction and the sensitive whiskers together provide information to your brain about the present and changing attitude of your head.
This combined with muscular, skeletal and visual feedback allows us to walk run jump etc.
However, if you spin around the turning forces on the liquid in one or more of the canals is forced into a position that does not necessarily represent you actual position or attitude. This causes a conflict between the combined position finding processes varying from confusion, dizziness or unconsciousness.
Illness can accentuate the sensitivity of the whisker feedback and or the rate at which the liquid can move around the canals - possibly a reason for such feelings when ill.
