Why do you get a bigger eruption with diet coke and mentos?

It doesn't. However, most geyser-makers prefer Diet Soda over regular because the sugar substitute is not sticky (sugar, of course, is very sticky) and therefore does not make as much of a mess for the ones standing nearby or cleaning up after! out during the explosion.

Answer:when i tried to see if coke or Pepsi max would Not necessarily The reason for the geyser is not a chemical reactionause the diet soda doesn't have nearly as sticky residue if not cleaned up properly.

Because it has less sugar.

The actual reaction is called the Surface Effect. Basically, Carbon Dioxide forms bubbles and as Diet Coke has more Carbon Dioxide than other sodas, it fills the holes from the mentos. Since the Mentos are heavy, they drop to the bottom of the bottle, forming bubbles all the way down. This is what causes the fast and furious explosion out of the top of the Diet Coke bottle.

Lots of thoughts on Mentos and Diet Coke. An internet search found comments that diet soda should be used (less surface tension than syrupy regular soda) and the soda should be warm (85F suggested):

• Yes it does. Any foreign substance put into Carbonated Beverages helps release the carbonation from the beverage. Since the carbon dioxide is forced into the soda, it is unstable and will fizz whenever there is something else added. I would like to rebut on that i did a fair test and placed one single mentos into a bottle of coke and quess what happened ... nothing there was no reaction what so ever.!

The rapid formation of bubbles has essentially the same result as shaking a carbonated beverate before opening it... it spews all over. ("Explodes" is a bit too strong a word, but "erupts" is fairly accurate.) Mentos is not unique, though it's fairly convenient. Rock salt has basically the same effect. (Similarly, it's not necessary to use actual Coke, any carbonated beverage will work... though for various reasons Diet Coke seems to work especially well.)
