In a Christian setting, one reason for having a group discussion is simply for the purpose of fellowship with others. Beyond that, it helps to have several people involved in a discussion in order to get input from several or many people in a group, talk about the goods & bads, rights & wrongs, etc, then determine as a group what is the correct and/or proper viewpoint or answer to an issue.
