Laws are in place to strictly regulate employment of minors. Minors are restricted in terms of what types of work they can do, how many hours they can work per shift and per week. Certain types of work can be done by minors but only with certain levels of adult supervision. In general, the age of 16 is the tipping point which most employers who do hire minors believe that the laws regarding minor employment ease up enough to allow employment of a minor to be productive and worthwhile. Besides legal restrictions, employers are looking for mature individuals who will show up to work, orient themselves toward the task at hand, and provide an honest effort to accomplish the task efficiently. Minors even at age 16 generally do not yet possess these properties to a full degree, but they can generally be useful around a work site with sufficient supervision.
