Why can't all engines use ethanol?

Modern engines can run some Ethanol. Modern gasoline engines are now set up to run E10, which is a mixture of 10% ethanol. To use higher percentages like E85, which is 85% Ethanol, engines need appropriate seals, hoses and engine settings (timing, etc.). Vehicles set up to run E85 have been selling for a number of years and are sold as "Flex Fuel" vehicles. Such vehicles have a fuel sensor in the fuel line to monitor the mix of gasoline and ethanol present and adjust the engine appropriately for the fuel being used. Either all gasoline can be used or any mixture of ethanol up to 85% ethanol (E85). Running E85 in a vehicle not set up for this mixture will damage seals and fuel lines.

What does the ethanol blend e85 consist of?

E85 is an ethanol blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. It is primarily used as fuel for flex-fuel vehicles, which are designed to run on a range of ethanol-gasoline blends. E85 is considered a renewable fuel source and offers certain environmental benefits, but its use may result in reduced fuel efficiency compared to gasoline.

Is ethanol harmful to car engines?

E85prices.com currently states that E85 is 13.4% of the cost of regular 87 octane gasoline. Flex fuel vehicles typically see fuel consumption increases of around 30%. So, you save about 13% but use 30% more fuel. So, for every $100 you typically spend on gas, you can expect to spend about $144 for ethanol.
