self raising flour is basically plain flour with baking powder in it so for a cake you can use plain flour with baking powder but it is easier to use self raising and it also has other raising agents. you need to use it to make you cake rise, if your cake didn't rise it would be small and very dense making its texture not as nice to consume.

Self raising flour is normal flour which has had the correct amount of baking powder mixed in to it already. Recipes that tell you to use self raising flour will not normally tell you to add baking powder, while recipes that tell you to use normal flour will tell you to add baking powder.

Can eating plain self rising flour every day hurt you?

I do not think it can "hurt" you exactly, but it is very very unhealthy to eat everyday.

What happens if you use too much of self rising flour?

Not unless you have Celiac /Coeliac disease or are allergic to wheat. If you are eating the flour cooked in something, it should present no problem at all. If you are eating the flour raw this is also not harmful (people eat cookie dough all the time), but I wouldn't personally advise it due to the definite "floury" taste which uncooked flour has.

Can you substitute bread flour with self raising flour?

Yes, in many recipes. But you would need to reduce or eliminate any baking powder or baking soda or salt called for in your recipe. In pastries, gravies and other foods that do not call for any baking soda or baking powder, self-rising flour would not be good to use and could spoil the food's taste or texture.

Why cant self-rising flour not recommended for yeast bread?

Self-rising flour (usually) has baking powder mixed into it in a certain ratio. Baking powder is used for rising baking such as cookies, biscuits, cakes, etc. It isn't appropriate for use with yeast because yeast is a raising agent. Baking powder creates gases that bubble and puff up baking by way of a chemical reaction. Yeast is a form of bacteria that eat sugar and excrete CO2, which is a gas, that puffs up baking by way of a biological reaction. If you used self-raising flour with yeast you would have two competing forms of raising agent - and I have no idea what kind of mess you'd find in your oven afterwards!

Is unbleached flour bad for you?

Actually unbleached flour is better for you than bleached flour. Bleached flour contains traces of bromides, the bleaching agent. It also does not have the nutrients that unbleached does. The bleaching agent, Chlorine dioxide, used to bleach flour is reported to produce diabetes-causing contaminant alloxan[1] when reacting with the proteins contained in flour.Studies show that alloxan, the chemical that makes white flour look "clean" and "beautiful," destroys the beta cells of the pancreas. You may be devastating your pancreas and putting yourself at risk for diabetes, all for the sake of eating "beautiful" bleached flour. If you eat flour, your best choice is unbleached. # ^ Lenzen, S: The mechanisms of alloxan- and streptozotocin-induced diabetes. No. Yeast are normally found in the vagina and the oral cavity, and grow out of control usually due to hormonal imbalances that lead to pH imbalances...almost never anything to do with the foods you eat.
