When the water fills the tank following flushing the ball-cock still raises but the bottle replaces half a gallon. Therefore the ball-cock switches off the water in the normal height but using less water.

No you don't need a tank to simply pump water from a lake. You would only need a tank if your using a pressure switch to turn the pump on and off.

You can't, you would have to drill a hole in the tank, spray water in it and let it drain. You would probably have to get a new fuel tank.
