Clocks that has a pendulum may contain mercury.
That is a misspelling of Pendulum. A pendulum is a weight suspended from a pivot so that it can swing freely. Some clocks have this...
Grandfather Clocks and Swings.
Oh yes. pendulum Clocks rely on mechanics. Digital Clocks rely on Electronics. And we didn't learn to use Electronics until way later than mechanics.
why pendulum clocks dont work at sea
In the 1930s
doctor.Galileo Galilee found that a pendulum of a given length takes always the same time to complete one oscillation .this observation led to the development of pendulum clocks .winding clocks & wristwatch's were refinements of the pendulum clocks

They had pendulum clocks. (What you might call a grandfather clock). Also sundials, water clocks, candles.
Pocket watches, chimney clocks, sun dials, church clocks. Only wrist watches are from a later date.
The most likely explanation is that you need to wind it up. Mechanical clocks, including grandfather clocks, need to be wound every so often. There should be some way to wind up a spring, which you'll see if you open up the clock.
in earlier times time was measured by sandclock or waterclock
