You can, in fact only use the exhaust hose and let the unit draw air from the inside, but you would lose the efficiency benefit gained from buying a dual hose unit. The air it draws in is air that you have already paid to cool. It would draw this air inside the unit to cool the compressor and the condenser coils. Then it would exhaust that air outside. With two hoses, it is using the warm, outside air to cool the air conditioner coils, so you are not paying to cool the components, only the air in your room. I strongly recommend using both hoses.

A Guide to Portable Air Conditioners?

Central air conditioning is not a viable option for many consumers, but there are several different types of portable air conditioners that will deliver impressive results if they are chosen properly. Because every individual situation is not exactly the same, it is important for consumers to understand which air conditioners are going to be the most efficient for their particular scenario. Traditional window units are perhaps the most popular type of air conditioners used in homes and businesses that don’t have a central system, but there are certain drawbacks that come with their installation. The units are often not very energy efficient and can cause a significant increase in a consumer’s utility bill. Many individuals do not like the look of a unit protruding from a window of their home, and the fairly low production of cold air often means that multiple units will be required. Rooms that do not have a window to the outside will certainly not be able to accommodate air conditioners that need outside air. Wall mounted units are also available, but must be professionally installed the majority of the time. Instead of using outside air, the wall units simply recirculate air that is already within the home or business. Because of the recirculation, it is often advisable for individuals using these units to occasionally open their doors or windows and allow some fresh air inside. However, most units do have a built-in filtration system that will help clean the air. The units can be mounted on any wall and do not require outside drainage or intake. They are a little more expensive than window units, but there will normally be a smaller number of units required to cool a large area. Roller units are also available for temporary purposes and allow a consumer to simply place an intake pipe out a window or door. Air conditioners made in this fashion do require outside air, but don’t need to be installed in the window frame. Because there is going to be drainage necessary, most units have a reservoir tank built in that will collect the standing water. While these are somewhat more expensive than window units, they certainly are the easiest to install and are an excellent choice for temporary applications or travel.
