You don't need to but you can learn about how similar we were to the prehistoric people, how similar their lives were to ours and how they lived and died, how they had two types of homo sapiens. There were the Cro-Magnon and Neanderthals. Cro-magnons were the smarter humans of the two and the Neanderthals no longer exist because they couldn't figure out the steps to live longer.

Studying prehistory now will help to understand today the changes that have happen. It may predict the future.
