No. I don't believe it has anything to do with the actual Mafia Wars application. I have had friends send me specific items and I have never seen them in my inventory. It just posts to my Facebook wall.

I never received bodyguards for completing the job required even another 7 times after %100, but have fought and received 6 now. The same with the untraceable cell phone, you will find that you need several of these and they are hard to come by. It would be cool if you could see what items people had before fighting.
