Theater companies make most of their money from food, not movies. When a theater first gets a film, most of the ticket price goes to the film company. The longer a film plays in a theater, the more of the ticket price the theater keeps. They make up the difference by charging high prices for snacks. As long as people are willing to pay high prices, nothing will change.
An additional factor is that once you're in the theatre, watching the movie, going down to the discount store and getting a five-gallon bucket of red liquorice for $1.98 is no longer an option; if you did that, you'd miss the movie. Theaters know this, and price their items accordingly. They also make some effort to keep you from bringing in your own food (pretty effectively in the case of popcorn, less so for a candy bar) for the same reason.
Does it really matter what I think? If that is their rule, so be it!, no matter who thinks elsewise.
Usually, but not always, the company that distributed the film takes 55% of what it made in theaters, the theaters gets only 45% of ticket sales, so that's why popcorn and soda is expensive.
